Day 1 - of the 30 Day Yoga Journey

Dear Yoga Friends and Jaya Jax Memebers,

I received this email from Pam Davis...Thanks Pam!!

And Thank you Deborah for creating this!

I am doing this journey myself as well and wanted to share it with the group. Follow the link at the very bottoe of the post to sign up.

Welcome and Day 1: Commit to your self-care

Welcome and thank you for beginning the 30-Day Yoga Journey!
Prepare to be inspired, challenged, validated, frustrated and perhaps even enlightened.
Each day for the next 30 days you will receive a new tool for beginning or enhancing your yoga practice -meditations, mantras, hatha yoga practices, communication tools and more.
This journey is appropriate for new comers to yoga and long-term practitioners so feel free to share it with your students, teachers and friends.
Your first day begins right now!

Day1 is below...ready? Let's begin together. Ommmmmmm.
Fondly,
Deborah Bernstein, Creator of the30-day Yoga Journey
Let's Begin now....
Call it what you will, "a fat-off", "re-commitment to the path of yoga", or simply "living well"....I'm beginning a journey. I invite you to join me. You may have very different reasons from me, but the reason is not what is important, it is the process and the community support. Two years of an erratic schedule (and several other equally great excuses) has insidiously added a whopping 20 pounds to my 5 foot tall body. Eeeek. Just putting this in writing is unpleasant for me...equally unpleasant was remembering that nine years ago Patriot's Day (a holiday here in Boston...AKA"Marathon Monday") I ran the Boston Marathon, and today, I would have difficulty completing a 10k. So yesterday, while prepping our house for sale (oh, another good excuse for gaining weight...moving), Scott, Chris (our realtor and friend)and I started what Scott coined a "fat off". Here are the rules of our fat-off: Whomever looses 10% of our body weight first, "wins". If I win...the guys treat me to a spa day...if one of the guys wins, the two non-winners treat to Red Sox tickets.
The fat-off is the catalyst for my journey. Winning it is not the goal.
I have a daily meditation practice and a daily yoga practice. My yoga practice has been mostly restorative for the past 6 months and erratic in the time of day and duration of my practice. My cardiovascular and muscle conditioning routine has been sporadic, at best and non-existent for stretches of up to two weeks sometimes. My energy level is generally moderate, and I find I need more sleep than "usual". I share this information with you as a framework for my starting point. And in the spirit of vinyasa krama, or "starting where you are", this is where my journey begins (at least on the surface). I've sketched out a process of physical, spiritual, intellectual, and emotionally nourishing practices to live over the next 30-days. They are practices that have worked for me in the past in enhancing my well-being and they are practices that I have researched and learned about from others. If you want to join me on this journey, I will offer suggestions each day for the next 30 days. Some of the suggestions may be practices you are familiar with, others may be new to you. Some will resonate, others will not. But join me and let's see where we go together. Let's enjoy the process....ready?
Day 1: Commit to your self-care
For today, write an affirmation that is a contract with yourself.

Commit to 30-days of wellness, perhaps note a goal, or perhaps keep it open-ended to see what outcomes arise naturally. Here is my affirmation, feel free to use it too. But be sure to put it in writing (even if it is typing it into the comment field of this article)

I, _______________, understand that I am undertaking an exciting, creative, and intense journey to enable physical, intellectual and spiritual self-nurturing. I understand that there will be days that this will be challenging; I will remain committed to my journey throughout those difficult days because I have support and because I care about my well-being. 30 days to feeling more energized...it will not necessarily be linear. I will remember this on the days that feel like I am regressing.

I look forward to the journey together.

NAMASTE. Deborah Bernstein

Lululemon - St. John's Town Center

Come by the store on Sunday mornings for Sunday Karma -
Community Yoga Program at 9:30am and
Run club on Tuesdays at 6:30pm.
All of our events are always complimentary!
Please check out our Events page to see what else we have going on!
Come and see what all the buzz is about!!!

  • the lululemon manifesto
Drink FRESH water and as much water as you can. Water flushes unwanted toxins from your body and keeps your brain sharp.
  • A daily hit of athletic-induced endorphins gives you the power to make better decisions, helps you be at peace with yourself, and offsets stress.
  • Do one thing a day that scares you.
  • Listen, listen, listen, and then ask strategic questions.
  • Write down your short and long-term GOALS four times a year.
  • Two personal, two business and two health goals for the next 1, 5 and 10 years.
  • Goal setting triggers your subconscious computer.
  • Life is full of setbacks. Success is determined by how you handle setbacks.
Your outlook on life is a direct reflection of how much you like yourself.
  • That which matters the most should never give way to that which matters the least.
  • Stress is related to 99% of all illness.
  • Jealousy works the opposite way you want it to.
  • The world is changing at such a rapid rate that waiting to implement changes will leave you 2 steps behind.
  • DO IT NOW, DO IT NOW, DO IT NOW!
  • Friends are more important than money.
  • Breathe deeply and appreciate the moment.
  • Living in the moment could be the meaning of life.
  • Take various vitamins. You never know what small mineral can eliminate the bottleneck to everlasting health.
  • Don’t trust that an old age pension will be sufficient.
  • Visualize your eventual demise. It can have an amazing effect on how you live for the moment.
  • The conscious brain can only hold one thought at a time. Choose a positive thought.
  • Live near the ocean and inhale the pure salt air that flows over the water, Vancouver will do nicely.
  • Observe a plant before and after watering and relate these benefits to your body and brain.
  • Practice yoga so you can remain active in physical sports as you age.
  • Dance, sing, floss and travel.
  • Children are the orgasm of life. Just like you did not know what an orgasm was before you had one, nature does not let you know how great children are until you have them.
  • Successful people replace the words “wish”, “should” and “try” with “I will”.
  • Creativity is maximized when you’re living in the moment.
  • Nature wants us to be mediocre because we have a greater chance to survive and reproduce.
  • Mediocre is as close to the bottom as it is to the top, and will give you a lousy life.

lululemon athletica creates components for people to live longer, healthier and more fun lives. If we can produce products to keep people active and stress-free, we believe the world will become a much better place.

  • Do not use cleaning chemicals on your kitchen counters. Someone will inevitably make a sandwich on your counter.
  • SWEAT once a day to regenerate your skin.
  • Communication is COMPLICATED. We are all raised in a different family with slightly different definitions of every word.
  • An agreement is an agreement only if each party knows the conditions for satisfaction and a time is set for satisfaction to occur.
  • What we do to the earth we do to ourselves.
  • The pursuit of happiness is the source of all unhappiness.

Global Mala 2009 - A Message from Dennis & Kathy Lang

Again this year, we are partnering with lululemon athletica at the St. Johns Town Center to coordinate a special Yoga Mala around Jacksonville. This is connected to the international effort Shiva Rea started years ago to support UN Peace Day, September 19h and 20th.
The purpose of the Global Mala is to unite the yoga community from every continent, school or approach to form a "mala around the earth" through collective practices based upon the sacred cycle of 108. Each studio can offer their form of a Yoga Mala according to their yoga tradition and inspiration. Examples can be:
· 108 Sun Salutations (or variations of 27, 56)
· 108 rounds of mantra such as the Gayatri or Maha Mrityanjaya (or variations of 27, 56)
· 108 rounds of a kriya (or variations of 27, 56)
· 108 minutes of meditation, kirtan, movement meditation (or variations of 27, 56)
· … or simply a standard class with a dedication or intention set for peace.
Go to www.globalmala.org for more details.
We feel convicted in this effort and envision linking all studios and practitioners throughout the area to support this. For us here in Jacksonville, we are holding a class at the lululemon store as the hub location, while other studios do their own variation as noted above. The store event will be held on Saturday, the 19th from 8:30AM to 10 AM. Kathy and I will lead the practice in a four part series of 108 Sun Salutations (four sets of 27) with a special dedication in between each set. If your schedule does not allow for that particular time, then simply a class during that weekend with the intention set to support the effort is enough. Leveraging our collective consciousness and intention during this weekend through the action of our practice expands awareness and can make a difference.
Thank you for your consideration. We admire what you do through your practice, your studio and your example.

Lokaha Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu!

Namaste,
Dennis and Kathy

Yoga Ananda's Upcoming Workshops

Ayurveda 101 Workshop - Part I: Know Your Dosha with Pamela Cefaratti
Dates: Sat 7/25/2009
Time: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM
Investment: $108
Ayurveda 101 Workshop - Part I: Know Your Dosha :: Ayurveda is the ancient Indian "science of life". This system of holistic medicine seeks wellness by balancing the elements of nature within the individual's body type. There are three main approaches: herbal remedies, cleansing, and rejuvenation. ** The first step is to understand your body type. Everyone is a combination of the five elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. Ayurveda describes the combinations of these elements as doshas. Vata is space and air. Pitta is fire and water. Kapha is water and earth. Each body is a unique combination. Health is balancing these doshas to your individual genetic code. ** In this workshop you will learn your unique body type and simple steps that are right for YOU to restore health and rejuvenate your body, mind, and spirit. This course will cover the basic Ayurvedic principles of elements and doshas. The instructor will read the pulses of each class participant to inform him of his healthy state (prakruti) and his current imbalance (vikruti). The course will cover diet, exercise, meditation, and daily living habits recommended to balance each dosha (body type). **** Recommended reading: Ayurveda: The Science of Self-Healing by Dr. Vasant Lad.**** Investment is $108 The course will be taught by Pamela Cefaratti who studied with Dr. Vasant Lad at The Ayurvedic Institute for 4 years. Pamela is a gifted healer with expertise in the following modalities: Ayurveda, western herbs, cranio-sacral therapy, visceral manipulation, and aromatherapy. After a tremendously successful career in industry and graduate studies in osteopathic medicine, she now integrates holistic practices into family life with her physician husband, three children, and dog. :: For more information on Pamela's practice, visit http://totalharmonyayurveda.com

Wynne’s artistic sound is derived from 20 years of musical adventures and spiritual experiences. ****It was Yoga that gave Wynne a new voice , a new instrument, and a new venue in which to use them. The new voice: Kirtan chanting, ( the call-and-response singing of Bhakti yoga) ; the new instrument: Sarod (a 26 stringed, sitar-like instrument from India); the new venue: yoga centers.**** The practice of yoga also introduced Wynne to the celebrated chanter, Krishna Das. Now a long-time collaborator with yoga’s most famous musician, Wynne has performed with Krishna Das at such venues as the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York; the Jivamukti Yoga Center in New York – the largest yoga center in the U.S.; and Yogaville, the Satchidanda Ashram in Virginia. Wynne played guitar, sarod, and saz (a stringed instrument in the lute family) on the groundbreaking Krishna Das CD, “Pilgrim Heart,” one of the genre’s defining albums, which also featured Sting. Wynne also played sarod on the Krishna Das CD “All One,” and composed the music for the Krishna Das single, Prayer to Rudra on the CD “Planet Yoga." As a yoga musician, Wynne has performed his music on such diverse stages as those at Constitution Hall, the Smithsonian music series at the National Zoo and the Millenium celebration in Washington DC; CB’s Gallery (CBGB’s) in New York, the Health and Harmony Festival in northern California, and Karmapalooza in Florida; as well as at museums, holistic resorts, bookstores, raves, churchs, temples, and private gatherings. Wynne has also performed with the Indian Saint Ammachi, and sang at a Washingtonian event that featured H.H. The Dalai Lama. He has recorded with many of the best-known New Age musicians, including, Shahin and Sephir, Sophia, Bhagavan Das, Girish, and Kim Waters of Rasa. And in 1996, one of the songs he cowrote with Maura Moynihan, “Prayer for the Pure Land”, won first place (out of 1900 entries) in the SAW National Songwriting Contest.

Do you know who you are? ● Do you know whether you are a doer or a witness?Do you know how your life unfolds? ● Do you know how you fool yourself?Do you believe you can be enlightened? Experience a crash course in Self-Realization beyond all concepts and beliefs. Learn through step-by-step, practical exercises that you are not a "doer" and that life unfolds naturally in the context of a cosmic scheme. Release fear, guilt, and all burdens that have been accumulated under the false notion that "I am the doer." Find comfort in knowing that the spontaneous ebb and flow of life is always geared toward greater happiness and freedom. Discover your innate, immortal nature that remains ever divine and free. Swami Shantanand Saraswati (Shantji) was born in northern India in 1946. Since early childhood he was contemplative about the mysteries of life. After graduating with honors from the University of Allahabad, he spent several years in monasteries and caves seeking God. He practiced Raja Yoga and meditation but ultimately realized the core of his being through Jnana Yoga. He has been teaching, lecturing and conducting workshops in the United States since 1980. Author of Are You Free, Power of Truth, Pure Wisdom, and Enlightenment he has appeared on numerous radio and television programs. An unorthodox mystic, Shantji is a dynamic and challenging speaker who engages the intellect but appeals to the heart with his clarity, humor and stories.

What to expect at the 2nd JAYA JAX meeting: 6/20/09

Hello Jacksonville Yoga Teachers!
We are in the process of getting more area covered of this HUGE city of Jacksonville. Melissa from Yoga Ananda has stepped up with enthusiasm to connect Southside, Riverside, and all the sides ... to get everyone involved. Thank you for your support and guidance Melissa! She is also starting a Facebook for Jaya so check that out and connect there as well.

This JAYA group (which stands for Jacksonville Area Yoga Alliance) is for the purpose of Unity among the many Yoga Studios in Jax. I hope we can help each other fill up our yoga-like workshops so we can continue to be a popular, sought after and well known place for Yoga-like events.
Who knows maybe someday the Yoga Journal Conference will be right here in Jacksonville!!!
Ooommmmmmmmmmmm. :)
So, We will meet again at Renaissance Healing Center which is located in Jacksonville Beach at 228 3rd Ave. N. (right behind Rita's Italian Ice...it's a little green and white house)
Saturday June 20th at 5:30pm. Last time we planned to meet for 1 hour and I believe it went on for more like 2 hours, with all that positive energy I didn't even notice the time! We met outside in a circle, as the beach weather was breezy and beautiful. I am hoping for the same for June. Lite and healthy refreshments will again be available. Please bring a towel to sit on, your ideas, a list of your summer workshops and events, and also some information on your favorite local animal shelter charity organization so we can create a fundraising event. ( My goal is to choose one charity per year to raise money for by offering a Yoga Community Event put on by JAYA which means all of us. This idea has been in the works by Marci Cervone and I for the last year or more. Involvement in this Event is of course optional.

If you are wondering about membership to JAYA JAX...
Right now it's free.
This is a good time to get involved as we have a lot of area to cover.
At some point there will be a membership fee for the hosting of a live website which will be linked to every local hotel, bed and breakfast and website that Jacksonville and surrounding areas offer.
I have already purchased the website domain and will be in the process of getting that going.
Lacy Norman (pilates instructor & co-founder of the Healthy & Fit Group) has been assisting me with getting organized so if you receive an email from her it is basically also from me...was that confusing?
This brings me to another point about the group...
We need to decide at our next meeting if we want to open up to other styles of teaching such as Pilates, Qigong, Tai Chi, etc.. I like the fact that we are a Yoga Group but I also hate to exclude anyone. Let me know what you guys think about that. yogaheather@hotmail.com

We are always open to new members and always will be. Please pass on this blogsite http://www.jayajax.blogspot.com/ to every yoga teacher you know.
Remember to email me your upcoming workshops so I can keep posting them.
I think that's it for now...I hope to see you all on June 20th at 5:30pm.

JAYA JAX!!! (Victory Jacksonville)
and of course...

Deeksha Blessings
I experienced this in Asheville, NC this past April at Namaste Yoga Sanctuary.
I had no idea what is was or what it was all about...as an adventurous yogini... I went anyway.
The feeling in the room was so amazing...the lights were soft the room was filled with light-hearted people, the music was angelic...
I sat on my yoga mat, instead of a chair which was available as well. The Deeksha Blessing givers were seated at the front of the room as they explained what was going to take place and how they came to be Deeksha Blessing Givers.
My experience was wonderful. I knew immediately that I had to find this in Jacksonville.
While still on my trip in Asheville I did some research and found Lavanya on line.
She has agreed to do our Deeksha Blessing service.
All I can say is...you must experience this blessing.
I would like to Invite Lavanya to do an event for us as a group, so let me know if you are interested!

What to expect at our 1st JAYA meeting

Hello Jacksonville Yoga Teachers!
I am very excited about gathering such a finominal group of people at our Renaissance Healing Center this Saturday - April 18th at 5:30pm
We will have Yogi Tea available and treats.
We will be sitting in a circle to introduce ourselves and announce any upcomming events (bring flyers if you can to hand out to the other teachers)
This meeting is about supporting eachother as well as making sure we are not scheduling our major yoga events on the same dates.
I have created this blog and will be able to add your studio as a link on the blog. Lisa and I are in the process of putting a website together which will then require a "small membership fee" to JAYA to be listed on the website.
I would like to plan a 2nd meeting date for June 20th due to the fact that many wanted to attend the JAYA meeting but could not make our 1st date.
Please mark your calandars for June 20th at 5:30pm.
